The location

The Hayloft is a hidden gem, sitting in the tranquil grounds of The Old Manse on the Rothiemurchus Estate, just 10 minutes’ drive or a scenic bike ride from Aviemore. Nestled in a private corner of the garden, the views from the loft are spectacular with its outlook onto the beautiful woodland all around. The property is within walking distance of the stunning Loch an Eilein (awarded the UK’s best picnic spot in 2010!) and Rothiemurchus’ network of hiking and cycling trails. The Estate is the custodian of one of the finest remnants of the Caledonian Forest so there are plenty of opportunities to head out for some clean Highland air and enjoy the serenity and beauty of the natural heritage. The surrounding villages of Kingussie, Newtonmore and Boat of Garten are all in close proximity and Inverness airport is around 45 minutes’ drive away.

The Hayloft is perfect for those seeking a bit of peace and quiet, in an unspoilt, tranquil location, while enjoying the first class facilities of Strathspey.  A fantastic base for exploring the Cairngorms National Park or lazing away the afternoon while listening to the nearby stream and watching the birds feed.

The property is reached via an external staircase that leads you onto the large balcony that provides a spectacular viewing platform where you can take in the beauty of the garden and surrounding woodland.

The interiors

Dating back to 1832, The Hayloft consists of the entire upper floor of an original detached carriage house, used in the old days by the Minister living at The Old Manse. The coach and horses were housed on the ground floor and hay kept on the upper floor. The carriage house has now been lovingly given a new lease of life with the refurbishment of the exterior, including the addition of a large deck, and a complete renovation of The Hayloft, to create a cosy and romantic hideaway.

The decor is an eclectic mix of modern, vintage and industrial, offering a contemporary yet rustic Scandinavian cabin style. With exposed beams and lots of wood accents and natural elements, The Hayloft is a calm and inviting space. The carriage house lower floor is today kept purely for storage.

The Garden

Guests are very welcome to use The Old Manse wild garden, which has a burn running through it, garden seating, and a footbridge over a small waterfall with access to the Rothiemurchus Estate and the wider Cairngorm National Park. Guests can pick fresh herbs from the garden troughs throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn months.

The garden is partially fenced in with free access to the adjacent woodland, stream and road - there is also an abundance of wildlife there so dogs cannot be left unattended and must be on a lead at all times.
