Dog-Friendly Holidays in the Cairngorms
At Love Cairngorms, dogs are very much part of the family — and all of our self-catering properties welcome them. Just as importantly, they’re located in places where you can enjoy scenic routes straight from the front door.
The Cairngorms National Park offers some of the best dog walking in Scotland, from gentle riverside paths to big hill days, with space, scenery and fresh air in abundance. Below are some of our favourite dog-friendly walks near Aviemore, organised by difficulty, along with practical advice to help you enjoy the area responsibly.
Easy & Scenic Dog Walks - ideal for relaxed strolls, shorter days or older dogs
Loch an Eilein (Rothiemurchus)
A classic, very achievable lochside circuit through ancient pinewoods — gorgeous in all seasons and a short walk from The Hayloft.
RSPB Insh Marshes
Directly opposite Railway Cottage, this expansive wetland reserve offers big skies, wildlife and peaceful paths across the Spey floodplain. Flat and open, it’s perfect for gentle walks and early-morning outings. Dogs should be kept close or on a short lead, especially during the nesting season (spring-summer).
Aviemore & River Spey Circular
A lovely, accessible loop combining riverside paths and woodland tracks close to Aviemore. Ideal if you want a scenic walk without committing to anything strenuous, and great year-round.
Lochan Mor
A quieter alternative to some of the busier Glenmore routes, Lochan Mor offers peaceful woodland walking with water views and a calm atmosphere — a good option for nervous dogs.
Loch Morlich
A classic Cairngorms walk with sandy paths, pine forest and wide open views. While popular, there’s plenty of space, and it’s a great option for dogs who enjoy water and long, flat circuits.
Moderate Walks & Leg-Stretchers - longer routes with variety and interest
Speyside Way
Sections of the Speyside Way are easily accessible from Aviemore, Kincraig and the surrounding area. Riverside walking, woodland stretches and open countryside make this a brilliant option for longer dog walks.
Craigellachie National Nature Reserve
A beautiful mix of woodland, gorge and viewpoints just outside Aviemore. Paths can be steeper and narrower in places, so this suits dogs comfortable on uneven terrain.
Alvie Estate
Close to Hillview Cottage, Alvie Estate offers woodland and riverside walks with wide tracks and lovely views across the Spey valley — a favourite for variety without crowds.
Challenging Walks & Big Days Out - for fit walkers and trail-ready dogs
Cairngorm Northern Corries Rim
A dramatic high-level route with huge views, but one that requires good weather, navigation skills and sure-footed dogs. Expect rocky paths, exposure and rapidly changing conditions.
Meall a’ Bhuachaille (Glenmore)
A great “first proper hill” in the Cairngorms with strong paths and big views. Expect it to be busier than quieter low-level walks.
A Wee Hidden Gem
Uath Lochans
Quietly magical, Uath Lochans combines woodland paths, boardwalks and small lochs in a wonderfully peaceful setting. You can keep it gentle or extend the walk for more elevation and views — ideal if you want somewhere special without the crowds.
Walking Responsibly on Estates & in the Countryside
Scotland’s access rights are generous, but a little care goes a long way — especially when walking with dogs.
Keep dogs on a short lead around livestock and ground-nesting birds, especially during 1 April-15 August
Avoid fields with young animals, particularly during lambing
On wildlife-sensitive sites, follow local signage and seasonal guidance
If cattle behave aggressively, release your dog and move away calmly
Always clean up after your dog and take waste home
These simple steps help protect wildlife, working estates and everyone’s enjoyment of the landscape.
Safe off-lead options - secure dog parks
Aviemore Dog Park (secure fields)
A local business offering secure fields specifically for off-lead exercise.
The Glade – Secure Dog Park at Rothiemurchus
A private, bookable secure dog field near Aviemore (exclusive sessions).
Weather & Terrain – What to Expect
Weather in the Cairngorms can change quickly, even on lower-level walks.
Paths may be boggy or icy, especially in winter and after heavy rain
Higher routes can be windy and cold year-round
Ticks are present in warmer months — check dogs after walks
Always carry water for your dog on longer routes
Good footwear, layers and flexibility with plans make all the difference.
