Mindfulness in the Highlands

Mindfulness: a mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.

Sometimes we all need to slow down a little.

If you're visiting the Cairngorms and fancy building a little downtime into your stay, there are some lovely ways to do it. Join a yoga class, book a massage, spend an hour in a lochside sauna, listen to a soundscape while walking through the woods or spend the day learning how to carve something from a piece of Highland timber.

Here are some of our favourite ways to slow things down while you're here.

Soundscape Meditation Walk

If traditional meditation isn't really your thing, this might be.

The Dell of Abernethy in Nethy Bridge has created a Soundscape Meditation Walk that combines music with the sights and sounds of the surrounding woodland.

With headphones on, you follow a musical journey along some of the quieter trails around The Dell, punctuated by birdsong and time to stop and take in your surroundings.

It is a lovely idea and a rather different way to experience the forest.

The Soundscape Meditation Walk is available throughout the year, but we'd recommend checking directly with The Dell for current availability and booking information.

Wood Carving at Inshriach

Learning something new is a great way to switch off, particularly when it involves spending the day making something with your hands.

Wooden Tom is a green wood carver and instructor based at Inshriach, just outside Aviemore, where he teaches carving in the beautiful oak woodlands of the estate.

His courses offer the chance to learn traditional carving techniques using local timber, surrounded by the sounds of the forest and with plenty of time to slow down and enjoy the process.

You'll head home with something you've made yourself too, which is a rather lovely reminder of your time in the Cairngorms.

As makers ourselves, we might be slightly biased, but we think there are few better ways to spend a day.

Join a yoga class

If yoga is already part of your routine, there is no reason to leave it at home while you're on holiday. And if you've always fancied trying it, a few days in the Cairngorms might be a pretty good time to start.

Katie White Yoga has a lovely studio in the centre of Grantown on Spey, offering welcoming yoga classes with a focus on movement and mindfulness.

Yoga Cairngorms, run by Linda Olds, is another wonderful local option offering yoga alongside meditation, breathwork and relaxation.

Class timetables and availability can change, so we'd recommend having a look at their current programmes before your stay to see if there's a class that fits around your holiday plans.

Make time for a massage

If your preferred way to relax involves doing absolutely nothing while somebody else does the work, we can wholeheartedly get behind that too.

Reset Refresh Therapies in Nethy Bridge offers a range of massage treatments with Anna, who has built a fantastic reputation locally for helping people unwind and recharge.

Whether it is after a day exploring the hills, a long journey north or simply because holidays are one of the few times we actually give ourselves permission to stop, booking an hour for a massage sounds like a pretty good idea to us.

Warm up in a lochside sauna

Saunas and the Cairngorms are proving to be a rather wonderful combination.

Sauna Cairngorms sits on the shores of Loch Alvie below the Rowan Tree Hotel, where you can enjoy the warmth of a wood fired sauna surrounded by beautiful Highland scenery.

There is also an outdoor sauna on the banks of Loch Insh, with wonderful views across the water towards the mountains and the added bonus of being able to make a day of it with watersports, walking or lunch nearby.

We've put together a separate guide to our favourite sauna experiences in the Cairngorms if you'd like to discover more.

Find a quiet woodland walk

Not every walk in the Cairngorms needs to involve climbing a mountain or ticking off the miles. Sometimes a quiet wander through the woods is exactly what you need.

Ellan Wood in Carrbridge is one of our favourites. There are several short paths winding through the pine forest, but you don't necessarily need to follow a particular route. We particularly love it when the sunlight peeks through the trees, catching the forest floor and changing the feel of the woodland as you walk. However busy your head might feel when you arrive, a wander through here never seems to fail to bring a sense of calm.

Keep an eye out for the wood carvings dotted amongst the trees too. They offer a lovely little distraction as you wander, along with the possibility of spotting a red squirrel if you're lucky. Eventually make your way down towards the River Dulnain and Carrbridge's old Packhorse Bridge.

Over in Grantown on Spey, Lady's Garden Wood is another lovely spot for a peaceful walk and one that visitors can easily miss. Originally laid out as an ornamental garden in the late eighteenth century, it is now a beautiful mix of mature trees and quiet woodland paths that are perfect for a gentle hour outdoors.

Neither of these walks needs to take up half your day. They're simply lovely places to disappear into the trees for a little while when you fancy somewhere quieter.

Sometimes doing less is enough

One of the best things about spending time in the Cairngorms is that you don't necessarily need to fill every day with plans.

Join a yoga class. Learn how to carve a spoon. Book a massage. Spend an hour in a sauna. Wander through the woods listening to the birds or simply sit beside a loch with a flask of coffee and nowhere else to be.

Sometimes doing less is exactly what makes a holiday memorable.
