Explore: The Duke of Gordon Monument

Perched high on a hill within the magnificent Kinrara Estate, this 90 foot column commemorates the last Duke of Gordon who died in 1836. It’s not a difficult walk to the top, and you’ll pass through some beautiful scenery as you amble along the easy track. Here’s how to get there, and what to look out for on the way.

Where to start

Park at the Dalraddy Holiday Park, a few minutes south of Aviemore. Towards the back of the car park, opposite the entrance, you’ll see a path that goes under a railway bridge. Pass under the bridge then head left along the Speyside Way.

Head up hill

The path will eventually reach a smaller, private road, and here you’ll turn right to continue along it. After about 400m, as the road bends right a second time, fork left on a track which climbs up hill, through old pines, juniper and birch trees. If you follow this path you’ll get to a gate to the edge of a field. Follow the fence line to your left and continue up the hill all the way to a metal gate at the top of the field.

The Waterloo Cairn

Now you’ll be back into the woods and following a rough track surrounded by ancient scots pines. Towards the top of the hill you’ll see a small track which leads to the Waterloo Cairn, just visible from the main path as a pile of stones.

This cairn is a great place to stop and take some pictures. It was erected by the Marquis of Huntly, in 1815 in memory of the officers and soldiers who fell at the Battle of Waterloo.

The final ascent

Return to the main track and continue up hill to reach the huge Duke of Gordon Monument, which is visible for miles around. From here, we recommend you have a rest and take in the incredible views of the Strathspey valley. You’ll see Loch Alvie to the north and the River Spey winding from the north-east to the south.

The best and most efficient way back down it to retrace your steps and enjoy the easy downhill journey. When you’re back at the Dalraddy Holiday Park, you could even treat yourself to some locally sourced scran from the Alvie Forest Food truck, handily parked in the car park and waiting to reward you for all your hard work.
