Explore: An Lochan Uaine

Known locally as ‘the green loch’ this is one of the most beautiful spots in the Aviemore area. Legend has it, the bright green colour comes from pixies who wash their clothes in the water – although the other theory revolves around algae, which isn’t as much fun.

It’s easy to get to and is only a gentle walk, so ideal for those with young children or limited time. Start with the Glenmore Visitor Centre on your right and then follow the blue markers up past the Reindeer Centre. Turn right at the fork and enjoy the view of ancient scots pines as the track starts to go gently uphill. The path will narrow slightly and become a bit rougher underfoot.

Eventually the path will emerge onto a larger track coming up the valley, and you’ll see An Lochan Uaine opposite. This beautifully green loch has steps leading down to the water’s edge – perfect for throwing a stick for your dog, or braving the water yourself.

If you fancy walking a bit further you can head towards the Ryvoan Pass and bothy. From the lochan you’ll need to return to the main path and follow it uphill to the left. You’ll reach a fork in the path and here you’ll turn left towards Nethy Bridge. Make sure you look around you as there are some amazing views back down the glen.

After a short walk you’ll get to Ryvoan Bothy, which is more or less at the head of the pass. Take a look inside this bothy if you’ve got time and if it’s open, but remember to take any rubbish away with you and always follow the bothy code

From here, retrace your steps back to An Lochan Uaine, and then follow the track as it descends the glen until you reach the road just before Glenmore Lodge. The quickest way back is to turn right, onto the blue waymarked path again. For a slightly longer (and prettier) return journey you can turn left just before the Lodge and follow the purple waymarked route. Turn right when this meets another track and follow it back down the road.

Go straight across the road to continue walking along the burn, following the yellow waymarked route. This will take you round the back of Loch Morlich, another stunning loch. Enjoy a walk along the beach, make use of the facilities if you need to, and then head right along the road to return to Glenmore Visitor Centre.

Oh, and remember to bring your camera!
